WVIA and the Pennsylvania College of Technology have teamed up to create informative programs about the cutting edge, technical careers that await our current high school and college students. As they are completed, each episode of the degrees that work series will have high school curriculum to accompany it and will be available On Demand here. Contact Andrea O'Neill at (570) 602-1182 with any questions.

To date, the completed and available programs and curriculum are listed below:

degrees that work series
available On Demand

degrees that work #101: Nanotechnology - click here The nanotechnology episode helps to define a technology that uses knowledge of atoms and molecules to enhance modern life through product development and medical research. The 30-minute presentation explores the technology and the related career opportunities with experts in the field.

degrees that work #102: Welding - click here The second episode in the series focuses on welding, highlighting the variety of careers available from the viewpoints of artistic welder Mike Patterson and Jennifer Brinkley-Cruz, manufacturing specialist for Toyota. The episode chronicles Patterson crafting a life-sized Great Blue Heron weather vane for a Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen show and follows Brinkley-Cruz on the floor at the Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing plant in Georgetown, K.Y., where she oversees 40 robotic welding cells. In addition, the episode illustrates the basics of welding with David Cotner, instructor of welding, and Martin Denault, a welding & fabrication engineering technology major, and features interviews with industry representatives at the Fabtech International and American Welding Society Welding Show in Chicago.

degrees that work: #103: Advanced Manufacturing - click here The program features a group of manufacturing students, who possess the hands-on, high-tech skills desired by manufacturers. The students test their skills by designing and building an off-road vehicle for an exciting international competition in Quebec: Baja SAE Montreal. In addition to chronicling the students' preparation and performance at the event, the episode provides an inside view of manufacturing with representatives from the National Association of Manufacturers, the nation's largest industrial trade organization, and Synthes and Victaulic, two leading worldwide manufactures.

degrees that work: #104: Plastics - click here Plastics touch every aspect of life. Without plastics, much of what we depend on daily at work and home would disappear. Despite its prevalence, the moldable material doesn't enjoy top-of-the-mind awareness, especially among the current generation of students. This episode of degrees that work. attempts to change that. The expertise of national experts is combined with the work of high school students engaged in a plastics project to illuminate the exciting nature and possibilities of the field. Visits to NPE 2009 in Chicago, the largest gathering of plastics professionals in the world, and to K'NEX Brands, one of the largest injection molders in the country, provide additional insight into a sector that offers ample, rewarding career opportunities for today's students.

degrees that work #105: Going Green Part I - click here "Green jobs" is more than a buzz term. It's a reality that offers tremendous promise for our future. Pennsylvania reveals that promise with its Green Jobs Report, which identifies five green industry sectors employing individuals throughout the state and nation. This episode of degrees that work.tv examines two of the sectors: Agriculture and Resource Conservation and Pollution Prevention and Environmental Cleanup. From farm to plate, the effort of a committed sustainable farmer to produce lettuce is documented, and the viability of careers in sustainable agriculture is explored. A trip to the recycling center in Pennsylvania's largest county reveals opportunities and challenges in the Pollution Prevention and Environmental Cleanup sector. The episode also includes a look at how colleges are incorporating green to better prepare students for an exciting future.

degrees that work #106: Going Green Part II - click here "Green jobs" can be a cryptic term, but the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania provides meaning and context to it with the Green Jobs Report. The study identifies five promising green industry sectors employing people throughout the state and nation. This episode of degrees that work.tv explores two of the sectors: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Exciting career possibilities in those fields are revealed by national experts and through the experiences of building science and sustainable design majors completing a green project. A trip to Washington, D.C. is included to visit the first LEED platinum-certified office building in the nation's capital.

degrees that work #107: Natural Gas Careers - click here While natural gas has been extracted for more than a century, advancements in technology have accelerated the industry's development in recent years. The capability to access vast natural gas reservoirs contained in shale has generated a "boom" in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The result is rewarding career opportunities, especially for those with a technical skill set. This episode of degrees that work.tv explores various career paths, explains the basics of natural gas drilling and production and visits a typical well site in north-central Pennsylvania. Considerable time is spent shadowing an automation technician, an IT expert and a welding engineer, all of whom are working in the field. As one of them explains, "Now is a great time to jump on board!"

This television campaign, conceptualized by NEIU 19, is designed to call attention to high school students who have excelled in the study of the arts. The partnering high school selects two students, one visual artist and one performing artist, who will be interviewed at the WVIA studios for a 1-minute vignette. The Artist of the Week spot showcases the student, high school, and school district and salutes them for their artistic achievement and will be aired on WVIA TV for one week and will be available here on wvia.org for one year. That artist will receive a copy of their performance and then be in the running to compete for Artist of the Year and honored on our Scholastic Achievement Awards Show in May. For students in Grades 10-12

Your resouce to what’s happening and what’s available from WVIA and PBS

There are so many resources that WVIA not only creates and offers, but has access to because we are a PBS affiliate. These resources often go unused because educators do not know they are available. We act as a filter, finding and researching different educational resources that are made available to us, and then putting out a bi-monthly newsletter that showcases what is available for teachers from all over the nation and the web.
